History is available in the *shell* buffer via M-p and M-n. The up and
down arrows move point up and down, as usual, but you can change their
default bindings like this:
(add-hook 'shell-mode-hook
(lambda ()
(local-set-key (kbd "<up>") 'comint-previous-input)
(local-set-key (kbd "<down>") 'comint-next-input)))
