Not quite sure I can help you recover it, but, I have some very
paranoid settings in my .emacs to avoid just this situation. If you
don't have something like the following, adding them will prevent such
tragedies in the future.

  ;; custom-set-variables was added by Custom.
  ;; If you edit it by hand, you could mess it up, so be careful.
  ;; Your init file should contain only one such instance.
  ;; If there is more than one, they won't work right.
