You must mean "for it to turn Auto Fill Mode off".


I don't know if this is standard.


It is.

Since when is nil positive?

It isn't.  An unspecified or nil argument is interpreted by a minor mode
function to mean toggle: turn it on if it's currently off, and turn it
off if it's currently on.
