Let me guess: I need to define a fontset and load the supposely thick
font into the slot of the normal one?

Use xfontsel to determine the actual font name (XLFD = X Logical Font
Description),

e.g. -foundary-family-weight-slant-set width---pixel size-point size-horizontal resolution-vertical resolution-spacing-average width-registry-encoding.
