know of something that will not allow you (some how) to monkey with a file
that you already have open elsewhere?

like some sort of 'strict opening' mode?

eg:

$ emacs filename.txt

i ^Z that file

$ emacs filename.txt

file should be opened READONLY or should bomb out with some error because
its already open
