No, I haven't downloaded gift yet, I know I should have but never got around
to it. Will do so soon and have a look in the FeatureExtraction folder.
Sounds like there could be just what I want in there!
I'll look into the vanilla Java and sox options too. Thanks for the
pointers.

In fact, vanilla (i.e. SUN's) JAVA is able to read jpeg and gif out of
the box. I personally found the JAVA sound API very flexible but
surely not the thing for the quick hack. Someone suggested me sox to
use for quick hacking. However, I guess you want to stay pure JAVA for
easy installing, right?
