I agree that comparing gnus and VM can be worthwhile.  I've used both 
pretty much, though I wouldn't say I'm a "master" at either one.  Here are 
some of the points that strike me:

VM
--

1) *Much* easier to configure and get running.

2) Much faster overall (download time, message display time, switching 
folder/group time, etc.)

3) UI is more like other mail readers.

4) Flexible support for "leave on server" functionality.


gnus
----

1) Integrate e-mail with news.

2) More customizable, and with more packages available to do TO-DO lists, etc.

3) Allows a message-per-file storage format. (This is important ... I've 
had VM folders so large I can't open them on a 256Mb PC.)

4) Easily browse mail groups, and create new ones as needed.


That said, I have to say that I keep coming back to Eudora.  It's very 
fast, and rediculously easy to configure, complete with filters, automatic 
stationery, multiple personalities.  The biggest drawbacks are that it 
requires too much mousing, and that it doesn't support a message-per-file 
format.  I'm going to look into mutt once I can locate a Windows version.
