Me faltó decir que he realizado varias instalaciones bajo CentOS 6.5 y
me ha ido mejor con Python sin virtualenv o parecidos.
Si te interesa, los comandos que ejecuto son los siguientes:
wget http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7.8/Python-2.7.8.tar.xz
tar xf Python-2.7*.tar.xz
cd Python-2.7*
./configure --prefix=/usr/local --enable-unicode=ucs4 --enable-shared
