    thermodynamics: make volume optional, replace it by density
    
    There are situations where the volume of the system is not defined, or
    infinity, and one still may want to use the thermodynamics module. See
    the discussion starting at
    http://article.gmane.org/gmane.science.simulation.h5md.user/468
    
    Store the number density instead of the volume which is the
    corresponding intensive variable (actually its inverse).
