Actual CVS does not compile (IRIX6.5, gcc 2.97 snapshot):

(didnt manage to fix this - GC_bool seems to be nowhere defined,
but replacing with int reveals undefined VOLATILE, replaced with
volatile reveals undefined GC_noop1.... etc.)
