In the manner of `catman'?  That's been redundant since terminals varied
in their number of columns?

The tag file only uses line numbers?  It could specify the text from the
start of the line for a bit, tag files can find the Nth occurrence of a
pattern, e.g.

    abc     foo     /^abc/;/
