For most high-res devices and fonts, if you're using the right
kern values, the visual appearance will be *exactly* the same.
(In most fonts, the double quotes are identical to two single
quotes side-by-side.  E.g., in Times-Roman, quotedblleft is
defined in terms of two calls to the same subroutine that
draws quoteleft.)  Only when copying text from a PDF will
you see the difference, by getting one double-quote character
vs. two single-quote characters.
