Does this help?
$ nroff <<<'X,u\[u030A],Y' | grep .
X,ů,Y
$
If not, a little example of what's working/failing, like I gave above,
might make it more clear. Also, do you know of groff's -k option and
the preconv(1) command? It may mean you don't have to type in these
Unicode codepoints.
