start of the brief thread, credit, as so often, to Tadziu for the
answer.  :-)

My last email in that thread summed up my understanding, here's a patch
based on that.  I think the main issue was the ambiguous parse of the
original;  I took it to mean that `d' alone was sufficient.  Feel free
to axe the example or otherwise edit as you prefer.
