Here's  a simpler example in which the length of the
line produced by the \D'l' request differs twice  in
nroff and troff:

   .ll 36n
   .br
   The line below should by one symbol long (one "en"):
   .br
   .sp 1v
   N - this is for reference.
   .br
   .if t .sp -0.8v
   \D'l 1n 0'

Here's the nroff result:

   The  line below should by one symbol
   long (one "en"):

   N - this is for reference.
   --

The  troff  result is shown in the following screen-
shot:

Why is an nroff line always longer than a troff line
drawn  using  the same request? Is it connected with
character-cell quantization?
