The metrics for `ah' are OK -- this is a spacing glyph. If you look
into old AFM files (which still have the `CC' command to build
composite glyphs) you can see that the caron is positioned
individually for each composite. Examples:
CC Scaron 2 ; PCC S 0 0 ; PCC caron 112 212 ;
CC zcaron 2 ; PCC z 0 0 ; PCC caron 56 0 ;
