I found a workaround.
I always do "../configure --src=.." and build in a sub-dir per architecture.
That is what seems to be busted.
If I ./configure ; make, it builds.

Are you using GNU make? I don't have another explanation except that
your make program has problems. While the makefiles are as generic
as possible it seems that there are still make programs which can't
handle them.
