AIX 3.2.5 does seem to work.

    $ cat t
    M
    .tm .w == \n(.w
    i
    .tm .w == \n(.w
    \w'a'
    .tm .w == \n(.w
    \w'aa'
    .tm .w == \n(.w
    $ troff -Tpsc t >/dev/null        
    .w == 71
    .w == 22
    .w == 40
    .w == 40
