I get a different result with (Solaris 8) nroff--see the attached
tt.txt.  I also ran it through troff and got the expected behavior--
see tt.ps.  The source file is tt.t and the invocations were:

        nroff tt.t >tt.txt
and
        troff -Tpost tt.t | /usr/lib/lp/postscript/dpost >tt.ps
