Maybe a good guy is contributing metric files for the URW fonts
(together with proper changes to the generate/Makefile)? I could then
add a urw.mdoc file (similar to the new ec.tmac) to load them. The
greatest benefit would be immediate support for the Euro glyph.

The good guy is putting his money in the same place as his big mouth :). Expect a test version very soon.

And here is the money. There are two versions of the make file, one for using with Ghostscript names and another to use the AFM files following Karl Berry's scheme as provided in most TeX distributions. As well I have added a heavily modified AWK script to translate GS's names to Berry's names.

There is one caveat. The slanted symbol font is not what it should be, that is, it should be generated on-the-fly. I wonder what tool was used to produced the symbolsl.afm file in the generate directory in the first place.

What I can guarantee: The fonts are mapped correctly, but the font mentioned above. And all fonts have an Euro sign --- as in typing \(Eu and obtaining the real thing.

I won't touch the issue of a download map just yet. In principle, convert the PS file to PDF with GS and print that, or print using GS. I presume that most people don't have PS printers attached to their desktop computers/"free unix" boxes but rather print to some cheaper technology printer and use some sort of RIP sitting in between (CUPS/redmon and GS, most often).
