I haven't had time to look at the source yet but here's AIX 3.2.5's
troff.

    $ cat in
    .de xx
    hello world!
    ..
    abc
    \fB.xx\fP
    def

    $ troff <in -Tpsc
    ...
    x font 1 R
    ...
    x font 3 B
    ...
    s10
    f1
    H576
    V96
    ca
    36b40cwf3
    56h44e36l22l22ow60w58o40r36l22d44!w67d44e36fn96 0
    ...

Quick answer: `abc' in plain, `hello world! def' in bold.  Note, `def'
is in bold too!
