Have a look to the mechanism of gcc. 
I know it is definitely complex.
But there are many compiler users juggling with -V <Version> 
(this is that what we need) and the other architecture options.

And there is no solution for pic egn tbl and friends ...
I think of an environment variable may be named GROFF_VERSION.
