No reply bcause I have been playing with it, nothing good yet.

My current thought is that is no data comes over the tcp:// for 120
seconds that gpsd should close the connection and then enter reconnect
mode.

Does 120 seconds sound right to you?

I can find no portable and consistent way to detect connection loss, so
timeout will have to be it.  No wonder http, https, ssh, etc, do it that
way too.
