Gary,

I tried running the dev snapshot instead, and with that, the example runs out 
of the box:

    pi@pheromone:~ $ gpsd -V
    gpsd: 3.24.1~dev (revision release-3.24-266-g371949e15)
    pi@pheromone:~ $ python3 example2.py
    Mode: 3D(3) Time: 2022-09-22T05:34:32.000Z Lat 32.729300 Lon -116.993854
    Mode: 3D(3) Time: 2022-09-22T05:34:32.000Z Lat 32.729300 Lon -116.993854
    Mode: 3D(3) Time: 2022-09-22T05:34:33.000Z Lat 32.729299 Lon -116.993854
