shm's opened fine:

Jul 29 14:38:24 gonzo gpsd[71196]: gpsd:PROG: NTP: shmat(0,0,0) succeeded,
segment 0
Jul 29 14:38:24 gonzo gpsd[71196]: gpsd:PROG: NTP: shmat(1,0,0) succeeded,
segment 1

gpsd opened /dev/ttyS4, and then the matching /dev/pps0, and found KPPS,
So this is good:

Jul 29 14:38:26 gonzo gpsd[71196]: gpsd:PROG: PPS:/dev/ttyS4 chrony socket
/var/run/chrony.ttyS4.sock doesn't exist
Jul 29 14:38:26 gonzo gpsd[71196]: gpsd:PROG: KPPS:/dev/ttyS4 checking
/sys/devices/virtual/pps/pps0/path, /dev/ttyS4
Jul 29 14:38:26 gonzo gpsd[71196]: gpsd:INFO: KPPS:/dev/ttyS4 RFC2783
path:/dev/pps0, fd is 9
Jul 29 14:38:26 gonzo gpsd[71196]: gpsd:INFO: KPPS:/dev/ttyS4 pps_caps 0x1133
Jul 29 14:38:26 gonzo gpsd[71196]: gpsd:INFO: KPPS:/dev/ttyS4 have PPS_CANWAIT
Jul 29 14:38:26 gonzo gpsd[71196]: gpsd:INFO: KPPS:/dev/ttyS4 kernel PPS will
be used

And gpsd is seeing KPPS just fine:

Jul 29 14:38:26 gonzo gpsd[71196]: gpsd:PROG: KPPS:/dev/ttyS4 assert
0.000000000, sequence: 0, clear 1627594706.992946200, sequence: 1 - using:
clear
Jul 29 14:38:26 gonzo gpsd[71196]: gpsd:PROG: KPPS:/dev/ttyS4 Clear cycle:
1627594706992946, duration: 1627594706992946 @ 1627594706.992946200
Jul 29 14:38:26 gonzo gpsd[71196]: gpsd:PROG: PPS:/dev/ttyS4 Clear cycle:
1627594706992946, duration: 1627594706992946 @ 1627594706.992946200

But after that, no PPS is seen, and no PPS error messages either. Very
strange. Everything KPPS working, until it does not.

After KPPS stops, good time comes in on the NMEA, and goes to NTP0:

Jul 29 14:38:28 gonzo gpsd[71196]: gpsd:PROG: NTP: ntpshm_put(/dev/ttyS4,-20)
1627594708.999994910 @ 1627594708.993109946

All I can suggest is bump up the logging and hope to see something.

If you could run git head I could add a bit more debugging.
