Kai, 

Speed of Locomotive can be max 100MPH. During the movement, a user may manually enter into the system an event from a pre determined list of events. Now the event has to be recorded along with the latest  coordinates. The location that is recorded along with manual event  needs to have 5 meter accurate Co ordinates so if I can revisit the same site where event was recorded. event can be different track features, bridges, signals etc. 

Where can i find Gary & Greg reply? Have they replied to this thread? I haven't received it, if yes!

My bad, I did not read your original email before replying to Bernd's email. I now went back and read it.

You're right, the Neo-m8l/u modules should be integrating the data from the GNSS with the on-board gyro and accelerometer data. You don't need to do your own integration of sensor data using (Kalman) filtering. The neo-m8l/u modules may also be able to get wheel-speed input, but the links on the webpage doesn't seem to work for me.

Q2) You ask for 5 meter accuracy. What is the actual purpose for this goal? Are you looking for specific location at each GPS point, or are you looking to determine when the vehicle passes a specific GPS point?

Besides this, look closely at Gary and Greg's replies.

I'll go through Kalman filter as per your suggestion. Don't have any model of tracks.

Any specific books/web pages that provide these intricate details?

Yes, that is what I had in my mind, but since you get gyro +
accellerometer in one chip these days, I somehow started to call them
gyro only ;)

Gyro might still be interesting, though, if you want to measure steep
climbs or call the rescue if the locomotive is rotating in unexpected
ways...
