Which is odd.  Can you provide a log of your data stream?  Easy:
        gpspipe -R -x 30 > raw.log

Send the raw.log here.

Can you verify your versions?  Like this:

    python -V
    xgps -V
    find /usr -xdev -name gps.py -exec ls -l {} \;

python-gps has nothing to do with gpsd and is not needed by any part
of gpsd.
