I was new to gpsd 12 years ago, I still don't understand it.

First: skim the web site: https://gpsd.io

Second: install gpsd and connect it to a GPS so you can see it work.

If you are interested in the internals, look at the slightly outdated
internals doc in the doc/ directory.

Is your intent to create/modify/fix a GPS driver, a gpsd client, or
simply use the software?  If you can be specific then we can provide
more specific directions.
