gpsd is not working on Jessie, Debian 8.1.
gpsd 3.11-3 amd64
gpsd-clients 3.11-3 amd64
First, the initial command in the file TROUBLESHOOTING does work, so I
know I have a device and a device file. I use:
stty -F /dev/ttyUSB0 ispeed 4800 && cat </dev/ttyUSB0
Second, when I run
# service gpsd start
and
# service gpsd stop
my program to monitor gpsd correctly notes loosing and regaining the
connection to the daemon. xgps also dies when it looses its connection.
$ ./gnome-gps -v

xgps also reports
"{"class":"VERSION","release":"3.11","rev":"3.11-3","proto_major":3,"proto_minor":9}"
When I plug in the GPS receiver, neither program reports any data from
it. gnome-gps should report the new device, but does not.
I then edited /etc/default/gpsd:
DEVICES="/dev/ttyUSB0"
I now get data in both programs indicating a connection with the
receiver such as the current time. I get a fix and everything looks
good.
This leaves me a bit annoyed. The old hotplug wrapper has apparently
gone away. Why? I am curious. What if the receiver moves to some other
device file, say ttyUSB3? How do I detect and handle that other than
manually?
