Well, that's disturbing, quite aside from your problem with the
read timing.  

Unfortunately the C++ binding is a bit of an orphan.  It was contributed
by someone who is now gone, and I haven't paid any more attention to it
than required to make the regression tests continue to pass.  I don't
like C++, and nobody else has been motivated to put more time into it.  

I'll have a look at the code for our working regression test and see if
I can at least bash the documentation into describing the actual C++ API.

To troubleshoot the read timing problem you might try writing a baby
client that does nothing more than echo received data with a timestamp.
Running that while gpsd is logging at level 5 should produce some
