And how are you gonna ask google when in a car near Silver Lake, OR?
No cell, no internet, hardly any POTS in that area.  Worse yet google
now limits the lookup rate to their DB, so a lot of exiting Google maps
users all of a sudden got broken earlier this year.

The reinvention is trivial with the USGS place names DB, and it will
actually work when/where you need it.

I have tried to use Google maps in Central Oregon, even tried the offline
maps mode.  A total disaster in a car and a great way to get stuck with 
a huge data roaming bill.
