I hate to answer my own questions ...

Nevertheless, as described in the thread with the old AMD CPU, compiling with "scons 
debug=true shm_export=no" seems to fix the problem.

Is this a general issue with 'older' 32-bit CPUs?
Could/will  it be fixed in the near future?

I'll keep testing
