i probably missed a few significant things to check - the ones i mentioned
are the ones that i have noticed broken unexpectedly in the past

another important one is to make sure that add-ons are loaded - i forgot to
mention that, because i have never seen that break, and because i always have
"midnight lizard" installed - if that ever fails to make web pages dark, i
would notice immediately with a YIKES!
