Actually, since it's implemented this way, it could be moved all the way
to NSGraphicsContext in -gui. Should I move it there?

There's a screenshot at

shows DPSTest's composite test (modified to do a PScompositerect with
NSCompositeClear before rendering) on top of Terminal.app.
