You are right again -- sorry -- as confirmed below

        cd ~
        # download the tarball
        wget http://www.gnumed.de/downloads/client/1.4/gnumed-client.1.4.0.tgz
        # untar
        tar xvfz gnumed-client.1.4.0.tgz
        # grep within gm-from-vcs.conf for those lines which begin 'database' 
        grep -e "^database" ~/gnumed-client.1.4.0/client/gm-from-vcs.conf

returns

        database = gnumed_v19
        database = gnumed_v19
        database = gnumed_v19

therefore when (at first) I had trouble to bootstrap to v19 on account of some 
errors I made to Mac-ify the bootstrap files, I must have tried to get 1.3.8 
working against v18 and maybe by mistake altered my 1.4.0 conf file. Sheesh.
