BTW in trying to myself interpret logs, there is typically included things like 
the following despite that I do not believe they are any part of the problem. 
Is it feasible to cause them to be written (logged) in a way that makes clearer 
that they are not the problem?

e.g.


        line 1429 You explicitly specified a configuration file

        (but I don't *think* I did, as I just did sh gm-from-vcs.sh)

and

        lines 1456 - 1458
        cannot load python modules / CRITICAL ERROR

which appears many times in the log … ??


Is the actual indicator of the problem

        line 1407 cannot set bytea_output format

which seems to go back as far as line 677? Is it something to do with imperfect 
support down to postgres 8.4 (which I am using) which needs something like (if 
not another option)

        set bytea_output parameter to escape in server
