Thanks for defining bug #58773. 

Indeed, the minor details of changing to 3 or 5 vertice polygons can be done
later, so don't spend time on it now ;-). The important thing is that the
infrastructure is now done.

Good to hear that the kd-tree functions are progressing. Once you define them
(and we are ready to start looking into the catalogs from every image), I will
do a code review ;-).
