Note that Nix & Guix use one directory per package, and thus resort to
symlink forests for user environments too (see page 61 and later of
<http://www.gnu.org/software/guix/guix-ghm-20120721.pdf>.)
The same effect could be achieved with a unionfs such as
<http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/hurd/translator/unionfs.html>.
