After following your advice I got a bit farther this time (see
the bottom 2 sections). However the built still stops. This is
the last result:

makeinfo --output=./out/ out/lilypond.nexi
out/lilypond.nexi:47: No matching address@hidden ifnottex'.
out/lilypond.nexi:96: Unmatched address@hidden'.
out/lilypond.nexi:6261: itemize requires an argument: the formatter for @item.
out/lilypond.nexi:8880: Unknown command `command'.
out/lilypond.nexi:8880: Misplaced {.

.... snip .....

out/lilypond.nexi:10137: Misplaced }.
out/lilypond.nexi:10138: Unknown command `acronym'.
out/lilypond.nexi:10138: Misplaced {.
out/lilypond.nexi:10138: Misplaced }.
makeinfo: Removing output file `./out/' due to errors; use --force
to preserve.
Making info file `./out/' from `out/lilypond.nexi'.
gmake[2]: *** [out/] Error 2
rm out/lilypond.nexi

configure:2963: checking for kpathsea/kpathsea.h
configure:3000: checking for kpse_find_file in -lkpathsea
configure:3055: checking for kpse_find_file
configure:3115: checking whether to use kpathsea

The above are the four lines related to kpathsea. Does this mean
that is actually using kpathsea?

You are right. It seems that the flex precompiled in NetBSD is
broken. I downloaded 2.5.4a, compiled and the *alloc problem
