set vs. override

When you change the same property a lot of times it is easiest to use
\set \set \set \set - but the manual dictates you to use
\override \set \set \set \revert .... - since it claims that lily "may"
crash if the stack runs empty.
Is this really true? Is it really dangerous to use "\set \set \set
\set"? (If I do not pop anything afterwards)
