So then why insist that the name used commonly _should_ be
GNU/Linux?
Because the operating system being used is the GNU operating system,
with Linux as its kernel.
What about GNU/BSD where you run the GNU stuff with a BSD kernel?
There is a GNU/kFreeBSD system out ther (k for kernel, BSD is after
all a operating system, like GNU).
Also, what's the rub on "GNU/Hurd" when the Hurd kernel *is* GNU?
It should just be "GNU"!
For clarity.
May I suggest that you read:

http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html
