More over I have to feed a family. Would you like me to beg for

If that is what is required to not do something that is immoral, yes.
There are many ways to get paid for doing free software, they range
from support to implementing features users want. You should explore
the way that suits you the best. Patents are not required to make a
living, they are only a hindrance in doing so.
