aka Hurd (Hird stands for "Hurd of Interfaces Representing Depth") coined
by Thomas Bushnell, BSG, the primary architect of the Hurd
http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/hurd.html (he was dismissed by RMS
because he has publicly spoken against the GNU Free Documentation
License http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2003/09/msg00707.html ...
http://softwarelibero.it/pipermail/discussioni/2003-November/008465.html).

Dan Lyons reports:

------
Speaking of Bruce Perens, I’ve also had the pleasure of trading email
with Bruce over the past several months. Going back over some messages
from Aug. 30, I find some perhaps telling hints about a kernel swap.

Responding to a question about what happens if Linus Torvalds sticks
with GPLv2 while the FSF moves to GPLv3:

“Much new work all over Open Source would go under GPL3, and much
old work not by Linus would be converted to GPL3. Linus is not the only
person who makes kernels, and in 10 years we’ll probably be using
another kernel with an Open Source license — who knows which.”

Same day, separate message:

“Perhaps 5% of the code in a distribution is the kernel. There are
a number of other kernels around. Debian, which you would otherwise
think of as a `Linux’ distribution, also runs with the BSD kernel, and
with the GNU HURD. But not quite as well as with Linux, today, due to
not enough interested developers. That could change.”

alexander.
