Nice to give clarifications on what is what. Those are hypothetical
explanations. 

I don't have misunderstandings on that. Certainly there can be free
"firmware" if it has corresponding source code and free "ROMs".

But I was contextual not hypothetical, if there is "free ROM" for MAME,
than it would be rather named "free game" or "free software", as by
naming something "ROM" it commonly implies, and this can be checked on
Internet, that such ROM does not have corresponding source code.

I speak in the context. If you wish to add on MAME issues, you could
give example of how MAME can be run with "free BIOS" (where is the
corresponding source code) in order to run such "free ROM" (I did not
find it yet).
