tla commit does this anyway.  You do need to have EDITOR set to
something sane.  (Unfortunately an empty patch log is created if
EDITOR is unset, meaning that if you tla commit, get an error, set
EDITOR as it tells you to, then tla commit again it'll actually commit
with an empty log message.)
