This is equally not-working in larch and tla. Any suggestions?

If you reall need it, maybe add support for spaces in filenames yourself
(I'm sure patches are welcome...). Otherwise, the only suggestion I
have, which you might not like at all, is to consider mass-renaming your
files. :)

... or offer Tom some money for implementing it.

Well, as one of the people who'd like to have that feature, I'll chime in and say I would. I've been unemployed for slightly longer than he has, and like Tom I've been working on a project "on the side" (whatever that means when you aren't employed ;-) ), but its not arch/tla and I don't have the time to become even a minor contributor here. But that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the effort/work that's gone into this. I do appreciate it. I think the design and features are the best I've seen so far (I stopped my exhaustive SF/FreshMeat scan for CVS replacements when I found arch).
