Try the old series of General Mobile. If you connect with a usb cable you wont need to connect a charger to phone.

Which would be the best phone(s) if specifically selecting to work with
gnokii?

If the answer depends on what usage is intended, priorities would be
writing contacts, calendar, TODO notes to the phone and secondly
managing SMS (read from phone, delete from phone, send via phone).
