give the correct permissions to the device and try
gnokii --identify

it could be useful to know your gnokii version nad OS version,
you are advised to use the latest version available, preferably
compiling from CVS, see http://www.gnokii.org/cvs.shtml or compile the
sources from http://www.gnokii.org/downloads.shtml
in both cases read the INSTALL file to decide which optional libraries
you want (eg. you might want to use bluetooth with another phone)
