Hello Alex,
I'll give it a try. Do you know if it is possible (or how hard it would be)
to use syncml over bt on a) in general b) on nokia phones and c)
on series 40 devices like my 6230i?
In general, would it be better to use SyncML for sync purposes, if
it is available? If so, then a sync ml client/server using gnokii
would sound like a reasonable thing to allow for simpler sync tool
development. Does this make any sense?

the opensync people have developed a new cool tool which allows using
SyncML over obex over usb to transfer contacts, calendar and other items.
Try it out if you have the right hardware. Says Armin Bauer:
