I ran .autogen.sh rather than command by command, and it worked,
although it gave me lots of warnings. However, I had to change a line in
my Makefile.global after autogen had run. I changed
LIBTOOL = @LIBTOOL@
to
LIBTOOL = libtool
Not sure why. Am runnning automake 1.9 and libtool 1.6.
Anyway, thanks - it built!
